An outstanding product
I love this, and also found it a pleasure to do business with Compact Appliance to buy it. I had a question and could actually reach someone by phone, who got the answer promptly..
At the low setting, you keep checking to see if it's on, it's so quiet. (On the high setting, it's loud.)
The two water tanks are heavy, but I (a not-big woman) can carry them from the kitchen sink about 3/4 full. The machine indicates when one is empty, and also shows which one. When both are empty, it simply turns off.
It took the unit two days on "high" to get my apartment from 20 humidity to 40, but it kept it on 40 when set on low.
I've had the ultrasonic (no capactiy, a pain to fill, and always dripping when you upend the water bin), the old floor models with a fan belt (have to be disinfected constantly), and top-fill table models (no capacity but otherwise great). This Essick is by far the best.

As good as they get
After loads of research and looking at different models in the stores, I settled on this one. It seems you just cannot buy a quality one of these. They are all made so cheaply. I have a wood stove and my furnace does not run until it gets below 25 degrees. So the best units, which mount to your furnace, is not an option for me. I needed to put some moisture in the air that the wood stove is sucking out. I was not crazy about the idea of the two bottles that you have to refill because I was used to the old humidifiers that you just poured water into the unit. However, the bottle design is pretty handy. I just fill them up in my bath tub and it is clean and quick. The two fan speeds is nice. At first we ran it on high but it is so loud. Now we just run it on low so that it stays quiet. It puts enough moisture into the air to satisfy us on low speed, even with 3500 SF. We still keep a cast iron pot on the stove filled up to help out. Other reviews talked about breaking the caps off the bottles. After a month, I haven't done that yet. I take care in screwing the caps back on and lower them into the unit slowly. Hope my luck holds out.

Overall good
I purchased this humidifer a few months ago and was happy with it first. One of the best features is the lights that let you know when to refill the containers....however they only worked on the first use. I checked it about a week later, becuase I couldn't believe that they were still full and sure enough they were both bone dry. They have not come on since, so I'm constantly checking them throughout the week to make sure that they are still full. Otherwise this is a great humidifer and beats out the Kenmore whole house that I had for five years.
