What The Energy Star Rating Means

Energy Star rated products use less energy than other products, save you money on utility bills, and help protect the environment. Look for the Energy Star label on quality household appliances, home electronics, office equipment, heating and cooling equipment, windows, residential light fixtures, and more.

Energy Star is a voluntary partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, product manufacturers, local utilities, and retailers. Partners help promote efficient products by labeling with the Energy Star logo and educating consumers about the unique benefits of energy efficiency products. Appliances with the Energy Star label consume remarkably less energy than the minimum government standard. Owning an energy-efficient appliance provides you with not only environmentally sound products but also saves you money in operating energy expenses. The fewer resources your appliances consume, the less your monthly utility bill will be.

The typical Energy Star washer uses 20-25 gallons of water per full load as opposed to a regular washer that uses approximately 70 gallons of water per full load. With an Energy Star rated washer, you may save up to 7,000 gallons of water per year.

Energy Star Rated Heating and Cooling

ENERGY STAR estimates that ENERGY STAR labeled heating and cooling equipment, when properly sized and installed, can save you between 10 and 40% on your energy bills. ENERGY STAR labeled products are not only good for your wallet, but also help prevent air pollution.

ENERGY STAR labeled air conditioners feature high-efficiency compressors, fan motors, and heat transfer surfaces. In an air conditioner, air is cooled when it passes over refrigerant coils, which have fins similar to an automobile radiator. The compressor sends cooled refrigerant through the coils, which draws heat from the air as it is forced over the coils. By using advanced heat transfer technologies, more heat from the air is transferred into the coils than in conventional models, saving energy required to compress the refrigerant. ENERGY STAR labeled room air conditioners must exceed minimum federal standards for energy consumption by at least 10 percent.

Many people buy an air conditioner that is too large for the space, thinking it will cool better. An oversized air conditioner is actually less effective than a correctly sized unit, and wastes energy at the same time. Air conditioners remove heat AND humidity from the air. If the unit is too large, it will cool the room quickly, but only remove a portion of the humidity. This leaves the room with a damp, clammy feeling. A properly sized unit will remove humidity effectively as it cools. Running a smaller unit for a longer time will use less energy to completely condition a room than running a larger unit for a shorter time.
