Who Needs An Air Conditioner With More Than 12,000 BTU's?
These large air conditioning units are designed for homes and businesses that have sizeable open spaces that need to be kept at a comfortable temperature. In general, the larger the room, the higher the BTU rating will need to be for the AC unit to work in an efficient manner. However, if the ambient temperature of the room tends to be high due to sun exposure or heat from appliances, then smaller areas may need a window air conditioner with more BTU's.
Why You Should Consider A Window AC Unit
There are many benefits to using a window AC unit in your home or office. Many homeowners appreciate the user-friendly nature of window air conditioners. These units can generally be easily installed by the homeowner and finishing touches, such as adding weather stripping or caulking the outside of the window, can also be easy to complete. When it comes to large window air conditioners, however, you may need to do a bit of extra planning, such as preparing a 220-volt outlet. But overall, these units are all designed to have powerful cooling abilities that will ensure that you’re comfortable when outside temperatures are on the rise.
Another advantage of larger air conditioners is the overall energy efficiency of the units themselves. Whether it's a 12,000 BTU unit or 25,000 BTU unit, there are plenty of Energy Star air conditioners available for you to choose from. These units have all been tested and certified to help you slash the amount of energy you use, as well as save you lots of money over the course of using the unit.
What Size Air Conditioner Do I Need?
Before you buy an air conditioner, it's important to know the square footage of the room you intend to use it in. You don't need the exact measurements, but it's wise to have a general size in mind. As you can see from the general guidelines below, the amount of BTU's needed to efficiently cool your space will go up as the room grows larger.
12,000 BTU = 450 to 550 sq.ft.
14,000 BTU = 550 to 700 sq. ft.
18,000 BTU = 700 to 1,000 sq. ft.
21,000 BTU = 1,000 to 1,200 sq. ft.
23,000 BTU = 1,200 to 1,400 sq. ft.
24,000 BTU = 1,400 to 1,500 sq. ft.
30,000 BTU = 1,500 to 2,000 sq. ft.
34,000 BTU = 2,000 to 2,500 sq.ft.
If you're not sure about the size of your room or are worried about other factors causing the ambient temperature to rise, then it would be wise to buy a window AC unit with a slightly higher BTU capacity than is recommended in the chart above.
No matter how large or small the unit may be, to achieve the most efficient cooling from your window air conditioner, you need to consider three things — central placement, close proximity to a power source, and limited sun exposure.
Tips to Buying the Best Window Air Conditioner For You
Using a window air conditioner as an alternative to central air conditioning is not only a more efficient manner to cool your home, it's also a smart way to save money. With low purchase prices and nearly non-existent installation costs, this type of air conditioner will more than pay for itself over the course of its lifespan. This is especially true for window units that are designed to cool large rooms.

General Summary of Proposition 65
The “California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986” (more commonly referred to as ‘Proposition 65’)
was enacted to ensure that customers be properly warned when a product contains a substance known to cause cancer or
reproductive harm. The law requires the State of California to publish and maintain (annually) a list of substances
to be available to the general public. Additionally, the law requires that businesses properly notify residents of
the State of California about the presence of these substances in the products they purchase, or that may be present
in their homes, workplaces, or that otherwise may be released into the environment. The specific list contains a wide
range of naturally occurring and synthetic substances including manufacturing and construction chemicals, pesticides,
tobacco, food-additives, solvents, household products, drugs and byproducts created from a specific product usage.
You may have noticed the below warning label on our products, or on products from other manufacturers. The warning
has become increasingly commonplace and oftentimes raises questions about why the warning exists, and what it means
to a customer. The warning itself is just one of many requirements for businesses operating in and/or selling products
to customers in the the State of California. The warning does not mean that a product that includes the warning will
cause cancer or reproductive harm, but rather it simply is provided in order to educate the consumer that a substance
may exist. A large number of the substances listed under Proposition 65 have been in regular use for many years
without any documented harm to a consumer. This is due to the low concentrations and minimal exposure that actually
occurs with these substances. Those chemicals, however, have been determined by the State of California to be listed
as potentially harmful.
I don’t live in California. Why did my product include this warning?
In order to ensure compliance with Proposition 65 requirements we have determined that all products manufactured by
Living Direct Inc, including products sold under the EdgeStar, Avallon and Koldfront brands, should include the
above-referenced warning label. This labeling requirements exists for all of our products regardless of the
location / destination to which the product is ultimately sold and/or shipped.
We believe that our products, when used as designed, are not harmful and as such this warning is provided
in order to properly conform to the requirements of Proposition 65.
