How to Store Your Food Safely With An Upright Freezer
Freezing your food allows you much more wiggle room in terms of preparing and storing it according to acceptable food safety standards. Many of those with large-capacity freezers find that the ability to make meals ahead and freeze them for later use is invaluable. If you have a freezer, you can also buy some perishable ingredients in bulk and then freeze them to be eaten later on. Freezing food also gives you the opportunity to purchase and preserve food that is expiring soon. The benefits of having a freezer are innumerable, no matter whether you are planning on using it for cooking and storing whole meals or holding ice cream, meat or other ingredients.
Upright or standing freezers are excellent as second freezers for extra storage or as primary freezers if you do not already have one. Because these types of freezers stand up vertically, they open from the front and are fairly compact and efficient. If you are thinking about purchasing an upright freezer for your kitchen, garage, basement, dorm room or other space, there are a few factors you might want to consider. Think carefully about what style, size, capacity and features that you want in your model in order to determine what type of freezer you are looking for.
The Benefits of Upright Freezers
Upright freezers come in a variety of different sizes, finishes, capacities with a variety of features to suit your every need. Standing freezers, aside from taking up very little floor space, can offer a number of benefits that other types of freezers, such as chest freezers or commercial freezers, cannot. Some models of standing freezers come in durable stainless steel finishes. Others have automatic self-closing doors or locks so that you will never have to wonder about whether you shut the freezer properly and whether cold air is escaping.
Keeping your food organized and safely stored is easy when you pick an upright freezer that meets your specific needs. Professional upright freezers may come with drawers that easily open and close for simple storage. Some models come equipped with various temperature modes that set the freezer to a certain degree or setting. If you want to make sure that you always know the exact temperature inside of your freezer, make sure you purchase one that is equipped with an internal digital thermometer to make for easy temperature readings.
If you find that you are opening and closing your freezer frequently, you may choose an upright freezer that comes with a lock so that you can ensure that the door is always securely closed. Upright freezers are typically energy efficient. Of course, the less you open and close the freezer the more energy you will conserve and the more efficient your freezer will be overall.
Picking Out an Upright Freezer
While some upright freezers are meant to be kept indoors, others are intended for outdoor or garage use. Know where you are going to be keeping your freezer before you purchase it so that you can choose one that is well suited to its environment. Think about what kind of access you want to have to the food that you put in your freezer. Do you want a freezer with drawers that will pull out and keep meals or ingredients easily organized? Do you want your freezer to have precise temperature controls and convert to a refrigerator if needed? What type of outside dimensions and interior capacity do you want your freezer to have?
Carefully answering all of these questions before you shop for freezers will make sure that you get the best upright freezer for you. General Summary of Proposition 65
The “California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986” (more commonly referred to as ‘Proposition 65’)
was enacted to ensure that customers be properly warned when a product contains a substance known to cause cancer or
reproductive harm. The law requires the State of California to publish and maintain (annually) a list of substances
to be available to the general public. Additionally, the law requires that businesses properly notify residents of
the State of California about the presence of these substances in the products they purchase, or that may be present
in their homes, workplaces, or that otherwise may be released into the environment. The specific list contains a wide
range of naturally occurring and synthetic substances including manufacturing and construction chemicals, pesticides,
tobacco, food-additives, solvents, household products, drugs and byproducts created from a specific product usage.
You may have noticed the below warning label on our products, or on products from other manufacturers. The warning
has become increasingly commonplace and oftentimes raises questions about why the warning exists, and what it means
to a customer. The warning itself is just one of many requirements for businesses operating in and/or selling products
to customers in the the State of California. The warning does not mean that a product that includes the warning will
cause cancer or reproductive harm, but rather it simply is provided in order to educate the consumer that a substance
may exist. A large number of the substances listed under Proposition 65 have been in regular use for many years
without any documented harm to a consumer. This is due to the low concentrations and minimal exposure that actually
occurs with these substances. Those chemicals, however, have been determined by the State of California to be listed
as potentially harmful.
I don’t live in California. Why did my product include this warning?
In order to ensure compliance with Proposition 65 requirements we have determined that all products manufactured by
Living Direct Inc, including products sold under the EdgeStar, Avallon and Koldfront brands, should include the
above-referenced warning label. This labeling requirements exists for all of our products regardless of the
location / destination to which the product is ultimately sold and/or shipped.
We believe that our products, when used as designed, are not harmful and as such this warning is provided
in order to properly conform to the requirements of Proposition 65.
